[15:13] sammie: Well, then...
[15:13] sammie: Then I was locked in my room.
[15:13] sammie: For... Weeks, it was the summer.
[15:13] sammie: And I healed and all.
[15:14] sammie: And then I mentioned it to my mom.
[15:14] sammie: And she gave me this look.
[15:14] sammie: And said, "What are you talking about?
[15:14] sammie: Youapos;re so delusional to actually think you were abused?"
[15:14] sammie: And my parents just played dumb
[15:14] sammie: And I literally lost my mind
[15:14] sammie: I had no physical evidence.
[15:14] sammie: I had no idea what had happened.
[15:14] sammie: I mean, two people are telling you youapos;re insane... You start to believe it, and become it.

We get a ton of produce since we entered the Washingtonapos;s Green Grocers program, so much so that I am constantly either throwing out sudden science projects from the fridge or Iapos;m fighting a losing battle to use stuff up before it goes bad. Lots of minestrone gets eaten around this place. Iapos;d found a recipe for mushroom soup, to which Iapos;d replaced parsley with celery.
(INGREDIENTS FOR AWESOME MUSHROOM SOUP)
3 Tbsp. Butter
12 oz. Mushrooms
1 medium onion
4 cups chicken stock
celery
salt/pepper
You cut everything up, sweat the veggies/onions in the butter, then pour stock over everything and cook for an hour. When you are done, you throw the whole mass in a blender, giving it a whirl, then pour back into the pot with 2 oz. Of good sherry, reheat and serve. Now the recipe specifically warned me about having a VERY tight seal on the blender lid, because otherwise you fling hot soup everywhere. So I had an especially tight seal on the lid.
They neednapos;t have bothered.
I swear the seal is getting old, that and all we have is a high-powered blender and even the lowest power was way to high for a starting blend. There is also no apos;pulseapos; button. Scalding hot wannabe mushroom soup shot up the cabinets, all over the toaster, down my armpit and side, and coated the fridge behind me. Iapos;m not sure how I missed the ceiling, but Iapos;m grateful I did. The kitchen is not an ideal place to keep the house phone even if it is in the center of the apartment.
Iapos;d been only minutes from completing dinner (which due to a mass of veggies needing to be cooked and a sudden spurt of inspiration happened to be a starter of mushroom and celery soup with homemade tortilla chips sprinkled in Old Bay, along with an ostrich, bell-pepper, and broccoli stir-fry over mixed white and brown rice). AgtOrange had gone outside for a quick smoke break and things had been peachy keen before he stepped out.
Next thing, Iapos;m in the bathroom applying cold baking soda paste to my armpit (which works wonders for burns) and then attempting to clean to a Chernobyl-style mushroom explosion while trying not to collapse in a fit of manic giggling. There is something ludicrious about burning oneapos;s armpit with hot soup.
By the way, what was left in the blender was delicious.

My insignificant other recently had a paper due on relations between China and Taiwan. She asked me about that or if I had sources she could use, and I told her that China is of little interest to me. She e-mailed me, asking why they were of little interest. (I think she was particularly confused because, as you know if you read this journal, I love international issues.) Here is my response... Feel free to comment if you think Iapos;m wrong, because I probably am.
***
When I said China is of "little interest" to me (or however I exactly worded it) I was being dismissive. I didnapos;t mean that in the strict literal sense. China interests me just as any other national or international issue interests me. Clearly China is very important in the world and to ignore them would be a fatal flaw.
What I mean by it being of little interest is that I donapos;t place the same level of importance on it that most people do. China today, for me, is like Russia was in the 1980s. Russia in the 1980s was a completely useless sack of shit, but it kept coming up to be blamed for Americaapos;s problems. China today is much the same. When I hear China being mentioned, itapos;s by well-intentioned but generally ignorant fuckheads who blame China for "owning America" or sending us inferior/tainted goods or some other complaint. They donapos;t take the extra 30 seconds to step back and consider that AMERICAN policies are why we import shitty goods or that itapos;s AMERICAN companies who are selling the shares that the Chinese buy. They are doing exactly what we would be doing -- picking up the pieces of a dying empire. We did it to Spain starting in the 1890s, and most of Europe from 1945 onward. So why blame them for being like us? Isnapos;t that what America wants -- more consumers?
Internally, China is an interesting place but predictable and therefore not really something I feel the need to monitor closely. The current generation (people in their 20s and 30s) are so well off that they take no interest in democracy or politics in general. As long as they can buy goods, theyapos;re happy. Theyapos;re very much American in this way. The regime in power, the Communist Party, is a shell of its former self. Its Communist by name, but capitalist by design. Like Gorbachevapos;s slide towards capitalism and perestroika in the late 1980s, China will likely disintegrate politically in the next 10 years. Unlike Russia, they are not composed of bloc states and have little imperialist ambition, meaning the transition will likely go smoothly and be largely unnoticeable. It may change names, but hardly structure. (When the USSR became Russia again, the system only changed superficially -- you still had the same elites making money and running the government. Look how many ex-KGB officials are now elected democratically.)
So, this is why China is of "little interest" to me. Do I think they should improve their record on human rights? Sure. On the environment? Sure. But I donapos;t see this as something that can be done either internally (thereapos;s no profit for China to operate in this way) or externally through force. While I generally dread sanctions, I think sanctions on China would do wonders to get them in line with a more modern or progressive outlook. More effective still would be modifying American policies to limit Chinese imports or the owning of companies or government bonds by foreign countries.
China is like Russia in the 1980s or America today. Smog and pollution in China isnapos;t all that different from smog in LA. Human rights abuses arenapos;t far removed from our escapades in Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib. We outsource our torture, but weapos;re no different. Of more interest to me is nuclear-powered, terrorist-breeding Pakistan, where the government has been unstable and suicidal since 1947 (at least). Or South America, which is finally gaining legitimacy for its strong indigenous movement. China is just one more country of well-fed materialists (in the Madonna sense, not the Marx sense). Until I see a sign of real political or social progress there, theyapos;re a bland vanilla flavor in a world not unlike Baskin Robbins. Why would I even pay attention to vanilla when thereapos;s so much more excitement and exotic flavor just around the corner?
Does that answer your question?

about jim crow
Flights booked for BASCon I land Thursday at around 3pm (timed so I can make it in time for cocktails), and then I leave Sunday at 10:20pm (timed for lunch Sunday). I kind of wanted to get a Monday flight, but then I decided it would be too much of a hassle room-wise. Now I just have to figure out how to deal with my suitcase after check-out time.
And then Iapos;m going to Disney World in December for the trip that was postponed in May due to my nephew landing himself in the hospital. That one is being handled by my dad, though, so he was the one who had to deal with coordinating flights and the hotel. At for that one, now that I live about two blocks away from the freeway heapos;s going to have to drive over to get to the airport, I donapos;t have to deal with getting to the airport for that since heapos;s going to pick me up on his way there. And now that Iapos;m looking at how much parking is at the Portland airport, itapos;s probably going to be cheaper to park there than to get a shuttle for BASCon. Many things -- including parking -- are so much cheaper here than in Seattle that I sometimes feel like Iapos;m living in a giant discount store.
Now I just hope my stuff gets here next week as scheduled because my wardrobe is rather limited right now. On the up side, I think everything not in storage will all fit into a carryon suitcase. On the down side, Iapos;m sick of wearing the same few things every day.

OMG...I know iapos;m gonn sound like a selfish person and probably there will be people complaining about how utterly boring and REPEATITIVE my posts are but i just have to vent out my fustration. Today we were given a briefing for our end of yr exam for 5th yr medical students which consists of a biomed pathology viva where we will be quizzed on 45 mins on stuff ranging from anatomy, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, diagnostic investigations to intepreting them. I swear I WAS SO STRESSED AFTERWARDS not to mention fucking hungry/starving.
Went to the student food court and (i know this sounds disgusting) and chewed and spat out some baked pasta and left over dried lasagne, chips and boiled noodles. I did it in the toilet and flushed the stuff down when i finished. Felt so guilty and scared afterwards that i spent the next 30 minutes puking everything up which i didnapos;t get much out except some stuff i accidently swallowed. After about 4-5 attempts of gagging and puking all i was getting out was just the diet coke and water i drank with it to help me puke. I then took 16 lax just in case to feel safe. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME I DIDNapos;T ABSORB MUCH OF THE CALS...LIKE BARE MINIMAL PLUS THE FACT THAT I THREW UP EARLIER. Hopefully iapos;ll be purging later when the lax kick in. Iapos;m still feeling so hungry even now. Could be cosi havenapos;t eaten anything for the past 7 monthscoupled with the stress hormones that is released from the exam briefing. Do you think iapos;m gonna gain weight? I feel like im going to balloon up. I think even my 1 hour exercise on the treadmill everyday seems to be quite little and not enough cals burnt. Iapos;m SHIT SCARED now. I really hope i absorbed an insignificant amount of cals...

To those who feel we can move beyond standardized spelling:
I realize in a world of text messaging, email, and even spell check, that using correct spelling may not seem as important as it was in previous eras. However, you seem to be of the thought process that phonetic spelling is easier to learn and perhaps more consistent.
I would like to draw your attention to what would happen if the English language suddenly became phonetic. Please define for me conciens, repntaunce, advowtery, and sese.
These words are taken directly from the phonetic spelling reproduced in Bevingtonapos;s Medieval Drama. Unless you want anyone who reads anything ever to not splatter saliva and blood over books, desks, chairs, rugs, shelves, walls, computers, tea cups, cats, and the random assortment of garbage that graces peopleapos;s desks, I suggest we stick with standardized spelling. Even if it doesnapos;t make sense. At least I can read it.
Hali
Why yes, this is a commentary on reading Middle English at ten oapos;clock at night. Not only are the words spelled funny, but their order is all screwy. But it is entertaining to read in what we today would consider high diction (Shakespeareanish) the words of a man saying, "Iapos;d hurt you but Icanapos;t wield my sword and hold up my pants at the same time, thus Irun away."

circulating fluidized beds
Two things that kick my ass when Irun:
1) Group training runs/races
2)RAIN
Dang, without those two, Itypically run 9:30 min/mile. But when Ihave those, Ican hit up to 9 min/mile. I figured it out this morning when Iwatched the sky making a decision whether to stay sunny or start raining. The sky finally chose rain after 2 miles and Iwas planning on 6+miles so Ijust pounded on. As Iwas checking my GPS watch, Iwas surprised that Iwas clocking under 9 min more often than usual.
Do you all have certain conditions that just gets you going and out of your normal rhythm?
Iapos;m so jealous of those of you who are running in halfs and full marathons Ididnapos;t plan for any this fall as the ones near me conflicted with a major family celebration. Iapos;ve been building up my miles for the long run though in the spirit of it all (13.3 miles on Sunday). :) Ihope that I can stay injury free so Ican run one in the spring
